Fear is a strong, unpleasant emotion that you feel when you think, either you are in danger or pain. You get scared when you feel something unpleasant is likely to happen, which you are afraid of. It is normal to have fears up to a certain level, but if your fears are above it, then you should seek help before your fear turns into anxiety. Anxiety is nothing but fear which persists over time.
Everybody has something to fear. Some people are afraid of heights, some are scared of a loss of money, some are afraid of fire, some are scared of water, some people hesitate to face rejection, some are scared of failure, and the list could go on.
PROS AND CONS OF FEAR
Many people think that fear is wholly a bad thing, which is not true. It alerts you for all the possible outcomes and helps you to get yourself ready to face all possible outcomes. During exams, the fear of failure helps you to prepare for it. If you eliminate this fear many of us won’t be doing as good as we are doing now. But, you might have met some people who fail despite being well prepared for an exam. Why? Because an excess of fear is bad or you can say the amount of fear that you can handle, maybe the other person could not. Because the ability to cope up with fear varies from person to person. You might have seen some people, who you know possess a love for someone, but they don’t like to open up and share their feelings because of fear of rejection, which means they are going to lose the match even before playing it. When fear paralyzes action, it is a bad thing. Fear warns us we are in trouble or danger, but sometimes we do something we were scared of doing, and then we look back and wonder why even we were scared about it. Learning from our fears and turning them into achievement is what we all need to learn and practice. Fear is like a teacher that alerts you about all the possible outcomes. Now it is up to you how you are going to handle it. But when it keeps you from your dreams, paralyzes you, then it is no more playing role of a teacher, and now you need to find ways to overcome it.
HOW TO CONQUER YOUR FEARS?
Luckily there are some tips to help you conquer your fears. Some of them are given below;
1) FACE IT
Do you want to kill your fear? Directly face it. It would be hard. You need the nerve to face what you are fearful of. But it will help you. Explore yourself to your fears. If you are someone who always avoids situations due to fear, you are going to miss out on many opportunities. You just felt the outcome would be bad, and you didn’t try. Maybe it was just your fear, and reality could be different from something you imagined. When you try to avoid your fear, it grows, but when you move towards it, it shrinks.
2) LEARN ABOUT YOUR FEAR
Try to learn about your fear. Observe how you react when it happens. Keep a record of what happens and when it happens. Start from setting small achievable goals to fight against your fear. To divert your mind, maybe you could practice a list of things when you are likely to be fearful or scared.
Visualize yourself as an unafraid and confident individual performing with competence in an area where you get scared. Your visual image will give positive signals to your subconscious mind to help you fight against your fear and let you perform at your best. If you have a fear of public speaking, visualize all the positive outcomes. Imagine yourself being wildly successful instead of failing terribly.
4) TALK ABOUT YOUR FEAR
Don’t keep your fear within you. Talk about it. Discuss it with your partner, family, or friend. Sharing takes away a lot of its scariness. If you are someone who avoids sharing fears with anyone you know, maybe because you think it is embarrassing to have certain fears, then you should seek help from a helpline number. Helpline numbers are available for your help. You can share your fear with them, and they’ll help you to fight against it.
5) FIND THE RIGHT PERSON
Find the person who you know had a similar fear as you have. Get in touch with them. Talk to them. Ask them how they dealt with it. What strategies they used to overcome their fear, were they successful? And see if it could work for you.
6) IMAGINE WORST SCENARIOS
It works best for me. I use this strategy oftentimes to fight against my fears. I remember once, we had a test, and most of us could not perform well, so the teacher told us that he would take the test again, but he would give straight zero if someone failed to get 70 percent marks in the test. Everyone was worried. Many students didn’t appear on the test due to the fear of failure. I remember standing outside the door and trying to ask myself what to do. At that time, I asked myself what is the worst that could happen? I would get a zero? That is it? I would still be alive. I would still get chances later to do better. Because it’s just a small test. And yes, I appeared in the test. It went so well and I scored above 70 percent.
These are some powerful ways to conquer your fears.
REMEMBER, whatever fears you are dealing with, there will always be one person who will never leave you, and that is YOU. Teach yourself that you can conquer your fears, everything will be OKAY, you can DO it, and you will see your fears getting weaker with every passing day.
